Hitchcock Nature Center

4.8

Overview

Located in the globally significant Loess Hills, Hitchcock Nature Center protects 1,268 acres of prairie, woodland, and wildlife habitat, including some of Iowa's largest remaining prairie remnants. Formed by deep deposits of wind-blown soil, the Loess Hills are one of the most distinctive landforms in the world. Comparable deposits exist in only a few places globally, making this region a rare and remarkable natural landscape known for its scenic vistas.

Open year-round, the park offers four-season recreation, including hiking, camping, bird watching, picnicking, and breathtaking views from its observation tower. Hitchcock's 14-mile trail system provides one-of-a-kind opportunities for hiking, trail running, birdwatching, snowshoeing, and backcountry camping, with interconnected routes that allow visitors to customize adventures ranging from easy ridgeline walks to challenging climbs through the Loess Hills. Visitors can also stay in the modern campground, cabins, or lodge while exploring the park's diverse landscape.

Seasonal programs such as HawkWatch, Monarch butterfly tagging, mushroom hunts, and night sky viewing provide opportunities to experience the area's diverse wildlife and natural beauty throughout the year. For even more outdoor adventure, Crescent Hill at Hitchcock offers nearby winter tubing and skiing.
