Abraham Lincoln changed the course of the American West when he designated Council Bluffs as the eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad. Then, on September 22, 1862, he took an even bigger step, issuing the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and changing the course of the nation. Join Abraham Lincoln historian Dick Miller for a short seven block walk following the route Lincoln traveled during his 1859 visit to Council Bluffs. Along the way, Mr. Miller will share stories about Lincoln’s visit and point out properties Lincoln later owned. The walk begins at 5:30 PM near the VFW Hall, 716 Fourth Street, and concludes at the RailsWest History Museum, where Mr. Miller will present a short program about Lincoln. If you prefer not to participate in the walk, you are welcome to join us at the RailsWest History Museum for the program. There is no admission charge and the public is invited.
