Join the Loess Hills Nordic Ski Patrol and learn the fundamentals of map and compass navigation in this hands-on class. We’ll explore different types of maps, with a primary focus on topographic maps, and learn how to interpret terrain features, symbols, and margin information. You’ll also gain practical experience using a magnetic compass and discover how it works together with a topographic map to help you navigate with confidence.
Ages 12+ Youth need to be accompanied by an adult.
This class will take place primarily indoors, with some time spent outside near the Lodge. Please dress accordingly.
Compasses and maps will be provided for the class. Participants will need to bring a notebook and something to write with.
About the presenters: The Loess Hills Nordic Ski Patrol is a member of the Rocky Mountain Division of the National Ski Patrol and serves Pottawattamie County’s Hitchcock Nature Center.
