Hitchcock Nature Center

Looking to level up your backpacking skills while exploring the beautiful and globally significant Loess Hills? Explore backcountry travel in this part-classroom, part-multi-day camping adventure sponsored by the Loess Hills Nordic Ski Patrol.

Advanced Backpacking will focus on taking a multi-day or through-hike backpacking trip. The class will build upon your basic backpacking skills and introduce you to the steps needed to plan, prepare for, pack, and conduct a multi-night backpacking trip.

This course includes the following instruction dates and times:

  1. The Classroom Session – Saturday, October 17th | 10 AM to 2 PM The classroom session will be held at Hitchcock Nature Center's Loess Hills Lodge in the Bluestem Room (downstairs). We will discuss available resources for planning your multi-day trip and what equipment is needed, and the class will end with planning for the field session the following weekend.
  2. The Field Session – Friday, October 23rd at 6 PM to Sunday, October 25th at 12 PM |  On Friday, the class will meet at the trailhead in the Loess Hills State Forest and start their multi-day trip, camping two nights and hiking the trails, with the adventure wrapping up Sunday midday. Details of the field session will be discussed at the classroom session.

To participate, each student will need to provide their own equipment for the field session; they must already have adequate basic backpacking experience.  Adequate experience is having attended Basic Backpacking classes at Hitchcock or having similar backpacking experience.  The class leader will determine if your experience is acceptable.

Participants should plan to bring their own food, snacks, and drinks.
